Shopping For A New Or Used Cars

By: Elisabeth Myrick

Shopping for a new or used car can be a daunting task. With so many different makes, models, dealers, and new car features, plus financing options, it can be difficult to know where to begin. The sporty car may not always be practical, and its hard to know if you should get a sedan, SUV, or mini-van for your growing family. Or, is that rugged SUV or a truck better if you have a lot to haul? There are a few easy tests you can administer to yourself which will make the task easier and narrow down your choices.

Lifestyle.

This test is all about who you are and your status in life, be it single, married, children or no. You need to consider where you live, city or suburbs, or rural. What are your activities and hobbies, what is your profession? And of course, what is your income? The objective is to define your vehicle in terms of function.

Driving style.

While driving may be more exciting and fun for some, everyone who sits behind the wheel of an automotive vehicle has a personal driving style. Do you enjoy driving or is it a necessity? Ask yourself how important performance is versus economy. This will reveal your needs in a vehicle from the driver’s seat.

Choosing the Options.

How much car do you need? Will a four-cylinder engine, now with more power and smoothness, plus the added benefit of lower fuel bills be enough? Or do you need a V-6 or even a V-8? Research the newer improved engines, many things have changed over the years and each engine boasts more power than ever before. Plus, what kind of transmission suits you, automatic or manual?

Selecting features and options is probably one of the hardest parts of buying a car. There are so many different options available. Options such as ABS brakes, as well as traction and stability control, are major contributors to safety. Other options add to the luxury of the car or truck, but are not essential to everyday driving. Research the different features and determine which you really need before heading the dealership. Test drive reviews are a good way to evaluate these features, as well as the manufacturer’s catalog.

Once you’ve researched the options, the next decision is which body type or vehicle category best suits your lifestyle. This means deciding between coupe or sedan, hatchback or station wagon, hybrid or crossover, SUV or pickup truck. Then you need to make the decision on performance, price, and options. The decision is ultimately about your lifestyle and what will work the best for you.

After you have determined the type of vehicle and the options that are the best fit, the next important step when looking to buy a new or used car or pick-up truck is to research the seller, whether it is a large manufacturer-specific dealer, smaller independent auto dealer or an individual, research their reputation. Do you know people who have bought from them in the past? How happy were they with their service? Were all the terms and fees properly explained? Talking to friends and neighbors, as well as reading customer reviews online will help paint a broad picture of the automotive dealership or seller. This way you can narrow down where to look for your vehicle.

If you are on a tight budget, buying a used car will get you the most vehicle for the least amount of money. Most new cars do not give you a lot for $10,000 or less, however, for less than half the price of the average new car, you can buy a larger 3- or 4-year-old used vehicle loaded with more features than the small, bare-bones new one.

Buying used cars has its risks, especially because you usually do not know how well the vehicle has been cared for or how it has been driven. Used vehicles may require a little more maintenance and repairs, and they may not be covered by a warranty. However, as the price of a new car or truck continues to rise, used vehicles are becoming more and more popular, and thanks to the introduction of certified pre-owned vehicle programs, buyers know the used car or truck they may be considering now comes with a warranty and has been thoroughly checked by a certified technician.
