Beaches and water sports are a few of the most popular forms of entertainment in America. Some of the world’s hottest beaches can be found in the United States and with those beaches come fun in the sun in the form of laying out and enjoying the warm weather, as well as water sports.
Water sports have increased in popularity over the years, from snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing or ocean canoeing. Many beaches have beach equipment rentals for these water sports right on the ocean; others offer tours or instruction from businesses near the water. Whatever your desire, there is likely a business near the water that can help you! However, if you want to scuba dive, you must first be certified.
Many scuba or skin diving instructors will first begin their lessons in a swimming pool so that potential divers can learn good underwater diving practices in a confined space without worrying about currents and sea creatures. There are many different types of diving:
- Scuba Diving: Scuba diving refers to swimming underwater while using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, which allows the diver to stay underwater longer than with the breath-holding technique used in snorkeling and free-diving.
- Skin Diving: Also known as free diving, this method refers to any of the underwater activities that utilize breath-hold, such as breath-hold spear fishing, free-dive photography, apnea competitions and, to a degree, snorkeling.
For beachgoers who would rather stay above the water, many beaches also have businesses that offer sailing instruction, canoes or rowboats. Learning to properly sail can be a long process, so there are also companies that take participants out and let them help sail to learn the basics. Renting a kayak or canoe for the ocean can be a lot of fun, especially when using one with a clear plastic bottom that will allow you to see plant and animal life beneath the surface.
Many beaches throughout the United States are open year-round, however, for beaches north of Florida on the east coast, it may be too cold after Labor Day to enjoy the water. That doesn’t mean that the weather will prevent you from enjoying on-shore activities and for many people, the beach in early fall is even more enjoyable for relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. In other regions, especially Florida and the Gulf Coast, beaches can be enjoyed much longer, and the water stays much warmer year-round. For the west coast, the milder temperatures may allow beachgoers to enjoy the sand, but not the water. Hawaii’s beaches are always open and the air and water are usually warm all year.
Beaches are relaxing for many people and provide a chance to enjoy the sun and fresh air for much of the year, depending on location. While it many not always be warm enough for a bathing suit, just watching the waves come in can give many people a much needed break from the stress of everyday life. So before you plan your next beach vacation, or if you live close to the water, remember to check out what water sports activities are available, or grab a book and towel and enjoy relaxing on the sand. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
